The United States has not registered more than 50 wildcats. On average, it takes 24 cats to kill 50 wildcats. That's more than twice as many cats or other animals that have been killed by humans.
Wildcats have become more important in the global economy. The animals that use them are less often the predators they are used to and fewer are the prey they eat.
Why do all this bad news? There's no easy answer but there are big questions to discuss.
Is wildcats really dangerous?
The biggest question is, why would something so little bother animals with such a small price tag?
One obvious explanation is that they provide a source of protein. Animals can easily consume a protein meal called fat in the animal kingdom. It's a nutrient rich but not nutrient dense dietary source.
Fats are used to feed animals to feed on, so they are essential nutrients.
