A new study, found that plants and animals in the area that use less water can have a better chance of breathing more mercury.

"This seems to have been seen when it is just about mercury for those plants, or when one plant is poisoned," the lead researcher said in a statement. "However, this is a significant step in the right direction to change this, because some plants such as algae produce more mercury than others."

The study suggests that plant-animal relationships may hold the most weight for determining whether we should be taking mercury health seriously.

In the same study, scientists found that plants are more likely to ingest higher amounts of mercury than animals for all of the same reasons, including "different levels of uptake of dietary mercury," according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

The study was supported by the National Science Foundation, of which EPA has provided $10 million.
