The FDA is currently evaluating which of its chemical ingredients may be deemed to be safe to eat. At this point, none of the ingredients listed as safe for humans have been approved for use in veterinary medicine.

However, C.S.A. is "looking at other products that are designed to provide appropriate levels of efficacy and tolerate, including those products which provide a significant degree of toxicity in humans because the amount of residual chemical and phenolic acid may be high," Anderson said.

Anderson said one of the products on the list would be a small bottle of green soy sauce and "it is safe to eat," and "that product has been approved by the FDA for use on veterinary patients".

In 2005, the FDA and USDA approved five new ingredients as far back as 1980 for food safety and development, which have since been phased out. C.S.A., with permission from FDA, is hoping to move to the other 5 ingredients at it's current approved levels at the end of the year.

For some animal advocates, that effort isn't the whole story.

"When I was a kid, I thought green soy was a food that would help to reduce meat consumption," E.B. Anderson told Business Insider. "When I was growing up, I always thought of soy as a plant oil, or a nut
