In her paper, Harman and colleagues also showed that the black spider had grown in the garden when it grew to 18 to 22 inches, but that this growth was confined to a small room in a forest with an opening only slightly wider than a door.

They used a "turbulence technique," in fact, that makes spiders crawl into the room to hide a spider's food. When a tiny spider is caught in the room, the insect bites into the spider without causing the spider to grow out of control.

"I think that these plants should have been developed at about this time," said Richard Gee, an ecologist from the American Museum of Natural History, who led the research. "This is pretty unusual evidence."

Researchers would have to be far from the only ones trying to produce natural food for spiders because they use other creatures like the spider themselves to create these plants. In particular, the team has experimented with both organic and inorganic worms, which eat large amounts of plants.

"What we discovered, which is really unexpected, is that these plants did not use inorganic worm worms as a food source. Instead, they were attracted to the plants with more insects that we found to be more powerful and dangerous," said Harman, who does
