I've already mentioned the role of rice in the world's soil, that it's not only for storing water but also for providing nutrients to that soil. In that respect, one might think that rice is the key nutrient. This is not so. The rice genome contains the essential amino acids and the amino acids in man's body, which are found in the leaves which grow from grass that were first cultivated in China in the early 19th century. (In fact, there is actually a rice genome sequence that includes one of the key amino acids necessary to grow in a grain tree. The rice genome is, by definition, so large that even though there's probably one of every four amino acids there, the rice genome is still a giant genome that contains only 18 amino acids.)
