South Africa's annual grass and grass-eating beetle (Thamnaxa bergi) can transmit its bite-inducing infection to humans as early as the age of one year, experts say.

When the insects travel from west Africa to eastern parts of the West African Republic (where grass-eating beetles are most common), they can live for months on end, causing them to eat most of the grass that's left in their homeland.

This virus has shown no signs of going down at the same time as grass eating and, in some cases, it's shown up in a wider range.

Experts say they hope to stop the spread of Thamnaxa but keep the risk of transmission from living in the countryside in mind as early as April 2018.

"With the current outbreak we think we can still stop this spreading," said Dr Chris Linn, chairman of the Southern Tropical Insects Task Force in South Africa.

"We hope to have this disease to stop over the next seven years, but in the long-term we need to focus on the root cause."

It is also important to note that thamnaxa can cause some serious health problems, such as:

High fever

Possible paralysis

Breathing problems

Loss of sensation in feet

Infections that may cause paralysis include:

Headache

Sleptness
